Uber |
Hello I just listened to an hour and 3 minute podcast from Latino USA called
Gig Workers versus Big Tech by Patricia Sulbaran and Julia Rocha. After listening to this podcast it taught me more about the world of Uber and Lyft and other jobs of those qualifications and how some workers who were struggling at their other job switched over and profited. "Despite drivers not being able to set their own wages which contractors are usually suppose to be able to do. Instead this companies secret ever changing algorithms determine drivers earnings," ok so there is profit but its a bit risky and I like how this podcast really showed that to all there listeners (Latino 16:30-16:45). The thing I didn't like is how to hear how some of these people who made the change from there old tiring job to these kind of jobs have high hope and then they get crushed from this strange algortihm for money. Then this is where I looked up an article to back up my sad thought of this algorithm crushing people's new hope.

Future revolution |
The article I chose to back up my thought is
"GIG WORK AND THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: CONCEPTUAL AND REGULATORY CHALLENGES", if its in all caps they know what they are talking about...right, and the authors of this long, loud title are Alex de Ruyter, Martyn Brown and John Burgess. This article talks about how this fourth industrial revolution, our time, is revolutionizing us and showing newer ways to make profit. But there are always backfires and if something is too good to be true then it is not true as the "Gig work can be seen as a view variation of putting-out and subcontracting, with no job securtiy and unpredictable employment and earnings," which is not something you should put your time in if your not stable (Ruyter 44). The main connection between this and the Latino USA podcast I chose is they both see the dark, evil scheme of this algorithm crushing hopes of a better future. These two things show how it is getting way more riskier to trust something with your time, money, and effort.

Probably all the Gig work companies out there |
Well after reading and listening to these two sources I am hoping for a better future for the less fortunate. The thing is as well that "It might seem longer but it hasn't even been 15 years since at base companies like Uber and Lyft were founded" showing how new this is and how awesome it was until this shady algorithm came into play (Latino 5:16-5:27). Even my article that I chose says "Gig work, as a form of self-employment, strictly speaking is a contemporary labor market phenomenon analogous to the current centruy" big words but they mean the same thing, how this new type of work was a complete shock to us all (Ruyter 39). This ties into my theme of technology and art by the simply astounding technology of Gig work giving a change to those less fortunate than us all but still making very little earning to what they need to pay for the job, specifically gas. This change is great just make the algortihm more solid and give those people who are less fortunate a helping hand in this dilemma.
